Audio typing isn’t that difficult to do, you will need to be able to spell well and have a good grasp of grammar. The faster you can type, the more you’ll earn as freelance audio typists are paid on a “per audio minute” basis. This means if you receive a one hour audio file, then you’ll be paid for 60 audio minutes – to transcribe this might typically take you 3-4 hours, but your speed/skill and income is something only you can ascertain by doing the work and seeing how you get on.

The equipment you need is minimal. You’ll need to download some audio transcription software that enables you to play back the audio file, but this is available for free on the Internet.

You’ll also need a foot control, which controls the speed/playback of the file as you’re listening to it. An audio typing foot control is something that’s really essential in audio transcription as the difference between trying to control and transcribe the file manually or using a foot pedal is immense. I’d say it might take you twice as long to transcribe a file without a foot pedal, effectively halving your pay… so it’s an investment you’ll want to make from day one!

Rate of Pay: How much you’re paid will depend on your ability, skill, reliability and current market forces. Once you’ve proven yourself then you’re in a position to negotiate a little extra, especially if they’re asking you to do some work for them with a fast turnaround because they know you’re reliable 🙂

Typically, you can probably expect a rate of about £0.40-£0.50 per audio minute when you start, building quickly after your first job to a lucrative payrate if you’ve the skills and speed.
